Genetic engineering Flashcards
What is genetic engineering?
It is the transfer of genes
What do enzymes do the enzymes do to the gene and chromosome?
It cuts the gene from the chromosome
What does insulin do?
Controls sugar levels
What are the steps for genetic engineering?
Find the gene from the DNA . Once the gene has been found you need to cut it out using special enzymes called restriction enzymes. Cut the bacterial plasmid using the same enzyme. Insert the designed gene into the cut bacterial plasmid. Insert the new modified plasmid into bacterium by giving it an electric shock and let the bacteria divide to produce human insulin.
What will farmers do to kill insects off their crops?
Spray chemicals
Describe genetic engineering in insect resistance?
take a cell from a plant in the early development, remove one of the chromosomes and the gene then offers insect resistance. Next put the gene into the chromosomes using enzymes and the gene with the chromosome can be placed back into the plant cell.
What are the plants called that have been modified called?
Genetically modified crops or GM crops
Give a disadvantage for GM crops?
Could kill other important insects or even animals or humans
