Defence Against Disease Flashcards
Name 3 types of Micro-organisms
1) Fungi
2) Bacteria
3) Virus
What is a virus smaller than?
a bacteria
What does Bacteria produce?
Toxins
How do viruses damage the body?
They cause damage to the body by the virus getting inside a body cell and infect it and the they start to reproduce
Name 3 things white blood cells do?
1) Ingest
2) Produce antibodies
3) produce Antitoxins
What do white blood cells release where the bacteria was engulfed?
Enzymes
What do enzymes do?
Enzymes break down an digest the pathogen
What are antibodies?
They have the same shape of the antigens so they can attach on to them and destroy them
What are Antitoxins?
They deactivate the toxins and make them harmless
What is inside a vaccination?
A dead/week end version of the pathogen
What is the effect of more people becoming vaccinated?
Less likely for the disease to spread
What do scientist think MMR is related to?
Autism
What is Autism?
A condition that affects communication and social interactions
What is the process inside the body when being vaccinated?
1) The white blood cells create antibodies to kill the certain antigens
2) They will then fit the surface of the bacteria.
3) Then in the future the body has memorised how to produce antibodies to kill the bacteria fast if it enters the body again
What did Ignaz Semmelweis notice in the 1850’s?
That there was a disease called childhood fever
