Genetic Diagrams p7 Flashcards
What are different versions of the same gene called?
Alleles
What are gametes?
In sexual reproduction, the mother and the father produce gametes (reproductive cells), sperm and egg.
What genetic information is in a gamete?
Each gamete only has one copy of each chromosome, so gametes only have one version of each gene (I.e. one allele)
What happens if the alleles are different?
Then the organism has instructions for two different versions of a characteristic but it one shows one version.
Which allele is responsible for the version of the characteristic that appears?
The dominant allele.
What is the allele called for characteristics that are shown?
Recessive allele.
What must happen for a characteristic caused by a recessive allele to be shown?
The characteristic caused by the recessive allele only appears if both alleles are recessive.
What are genes represented by in genetic diagrams?
Letters
What type of letter shows a dominant allele in a genetic diagram?
Capital letter
What type of allele does a small letter represent in a genetic diagram?
A recessive allele
What does it mean if you are homozygous for a trait?
You have two alleles the same for that particular gene (e.g. CC or cc)
What does it mean if you are heterozygous for a trait?
You have two different alleles for that particular gene (e.g Cc)
What is an organisms genotype?
The alleles it has
What is an organisms phenotype?
The characteristics it displays
See page 7 for genetic diagrams and for the question about genetic diagrams.
