Genetic code Flashcards
What is the order of bases called?
The order of bases is called the genetic code which consists of triple of bases, with each of triplet of bases coding for a particular amino acid known as a codon.
What are the amino acids joined together by?
A peptide bonds and form a polypeptide chain.
What is a gene?
A gene is a sequence of bases on a DNA molecule coding for a sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain.
What is the location of a gene called?
Locus
Are all genome codes proteins?
All genome codes arent proteins - the non coding regions are called introns and the coding regions are called exons.
How many nucleotide bases code for 20 different amino acids?
four
What is the meaning of genetic code being non-overlapping?
Meaning the triplet is only read once and the triplets don’t share any bases.
What does it mean by the genetic code is degenerate?
More than the triplet codes for the same amino acid reduces the mutations which are mistakes in the base sequence such as base deletion, insertion, or substitution.
What does a change in the base sequence of DNA do?
It alters the amino acid sequence and the protein therefore it can have various effects.
What do gene codes contain?
Start and stop codons.
