Biodiversity and calculating index of diversity. Flashcards
What is species diversity?
The number of different species and individuals within each species in a community.
What is genetic diversity?
The variety of genes amongst all the individuals in a population of one species.
What is ecosystem diversity?
The range of different habitats.
What is species richness?
The number of different species in a particular area at a particular time.
What is biodiversity?
Biodiverstiy can be used to describe a range of habitats, from small local habitats to the entire earth.
Could decrease in diversity be a problem?
A decrease in diversity can be a cause for concern, and this is often caused by human activity.
How does farming reduce biodiversity?
- Destruction of hedgerows.
- Selective breeding
- Monocultures
- Overgrazing
- Filling in ponds and draining wetlands.
What is an index of diversity?
A measure of species diversity. It is a calculation to measure the relationship between the number of species in a community and the number of individuals in each species.
