Genes, Chromosomes and DNA Flashcards
1
Q
3 examples of things that do asexual reproduction:
A
- Strawberry Plant - using stems that grow along the ground (runners)
- Potatoes - using tubers
- Insects such as aphids - Asexually reproduction allows them to reproduce much faster
2
Q
Name the 3 key features of a sperm cell:
A
- Acrosome - contains certain enzymes used to break down the wall of the egg and fertilise it.
- Nucleus - contains 23 chromosomes
- Tail - helps the sperm move through the uterus. It contains mitochondria to give it energy
3
Q
Name the 3 main parts of an egg cell:
A
- very large - stores food and energy for the cell ( in the cytoplasm)
- Nucleus - containing 23 chromosomes
- Jelly coat - to protect in when it is moving into the uterus
4
Q
What does the Nucleus contain?
A
Genetic material in the form of chromosomes
5
Q
What do chromosomes carry?
A
Genes
6
Q
What are alleles?
A
Different versions of the same gene
7
Q
What shape is a DNA molecule?
A
Double helix
