Generation and Propagation of Action Potentials Flashcards
In terms of resting membrane potential, what is unique about neurons?
They can rapidly change their membrane potential
Opposite charges _____________; same charges ____________.
Are attracted to each other, are repelled
It requires energy to keep opposite charges separated. So, when opposite charges are separated by a membrane, the system has ___________________.
Potential energy
Define voltage, current, and resistance. ◦ What is used to measure voltage?
(Slides)
Measured in volts (V) or millivolts (mV) Instrument is Voltmeter
Come up with a way to fully understand the principles of voltage, current, and resistance – and how these concepts interplay with one another. If my river example worked for you, you can steal it.
Be familiar with the equation on slide 5! I recommend plugging some made up numbers in to see how increasing/decreasing certain values changes the other values.
In terms of resistance, define conductor and insulator.
Resistance - hinderance to charge flow
◦ Insulator : substance with high electrical resistance
◦ Conductor : substance with low electrical resistance
Insulator ex: plastic or foam Conductor: Metals like copper
