Causes of generalized oedema
A
- Nephrotic syndrome
- Liver cirrhosis
- Congestive HF
- Protein losing enteropathy
- Malnutrition

Steps in physical examination
A
- Look for generalised anasarca (extreme oedema):
• Periorbital oedema, ankle oedema, distended abdomen, scrotal oedema
• Pallor, wasting esp buttock (malnutrition, malabsorption)
• Cushingnoid (nephrotic)
• Jaundice
• Dyspnoea ( HF) - Hands for clubbing and liver palm
- Chest for spider and pleural effusion
- Abdo for liver, spleen, bowel masses and fistula and ascites
