General Science, module 4 Flashcards
Define “force”.
A push or pull exerted on an object in an effort to change that object’s velocity.
Define “simple machine”.
A device that either multiplies or redirects a force.
Define “mechanical advantage”.
The amount by which force or motion is magnified in a simple machine.
How is applied science different from science?
Science is motivated by curiosity to understand, while applied science is aimed at trying to find something useful.
Define “technology”.
Technology is a new process or machine that makes life better or a job easier.
What gives rise to technology?
Technology can be the result of applied science, science, or accident.
List the 6 types of simple machines.
Lever, inclined plane, wedge, wheel and axle, pulley, and screw.
Which two simple machines look identical?
Wedge and inclined plane.
What is the mechanical advantage calculation for a lever?
MA= (distance from fulcrum to effort)/(distance from fulcrum to resistance)
What is the mechanical advantage calculation for a wheel and axle?
MA=(diameter of wheel)/(diameter of axle)
What is the mechanical advantage calculation for a pulley system?
MA= number of pulleys used
What is the mechanical advantage calculation for a wedge or inclined plane?
MA=(length of slope)/(height)
What is the mechanical advantage calculation for a screw?
MA= circumference/pitch
