General reaction of amino acid breakdown Flashcards
What is the term of transamination
It is the exchange of amino group between one amino acid & another keto acid forming new alpha amino acid
Difference between transamination and deamination
Process:
Transamination: Transfer of an amino group from one amino acid to a keto acid, forming a new amino acid and a new keto acid.
Deamination: removal of an amino group from an amino acid, producing ammonia and a keto acid.
Products:
Transamination: Results in the formation of a new amino acid and a keto acid.
Deamination: Produces ammonia and a keto acid.
Purpose:
Transamination: Plays a role in the synthesis of new amino acids.
Deamination: Often part of the process to metabolize amino acids for energy or convert them into other substances.
Enzymes:
Transamination: Catalyzed by enzymes known as transaminases or aminotransferases.
Deamination: Catalyzed by deaminases.
Ammonia Production:
Transamination: Does not produce ammonia.
Deamination: Produces ammonia as a byproduct.
Difference between oxidative and non-oxidation deamination
Oxidative Deamination:
**DEFINITION: ** the removal of an amino group from an amino acid involves oxidation.
Enzyme: Catalyzed by enzymes known as deaminases, and a specific example is the enzyme monoamine oxidase.
Products: form keto acid and ammonia.
Purpose: This process is often associated with the production of energy or the conversion of amino acids into other molecules.
Non-oxidative Deamination:
DEFINITION: the removal of an amino group occurs without an accompanying oxidation reaction.
Enzyme: Catalyzed by enzymes such as transaminases or aminotransferases.
Products: form keto acid and ammonia.
Purpose: Non-oxidative deamination is often involved in the synthesis of new amino acids and maintaining nitrogen balance.
