General Pathology of Infectious Disease 1 Flashcards
pathogens types listed from small to large
prions, viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, helminths
what are prions composed of?
only a modified host protein
prions can cause what disease
spongiform encephalopathies (Kuru, Creutzfeld-Jakob, Bonvine spongiform encephalopathy)
which prion causing disease can be passed via corneal transplant?
Creutzfeldt- Jakob disease
what is unique about fungi cell walls?
they are thick and are not dissolvable in KOH
list of protozoal parasites?
- tricomonas (vaginitis)
- giardia and entamoeba (intestinal)
- plasmodium (malaria, vector)
- toxaplasma (undercooked meat, cat feces)
description of helminths
parasitic worms that are highly differentiated multicellular organisms
round worm helminths are
nematodes- usually interstitial
ascaris, pinworms- common in infants
flat worm helminths are
cestodes (pork and beef tapeworms)
fluke helminths are
trematodes
schistosomes
examples of ectoparasites
- insects (lice, fleas)
- mites (scabies, tics)
- vectors (for disease spreading)
what are the most common viruses associated with “colds”
rhinoviruses and coronavirus
what virus has a very diverse clinical syndromes
adenovirus
what does parainfluenza infection cause?
mild croup in children, cough in adults
acute pneumonitis with a barking cough in children
how can croup be distinguished diagnostically?
using an anterior/posterior X ray of the tracheal area would show a classic steeple sign (narrowing of tracheal airway)
