What are aliphatic compounds?

A

Contain linear or branched chains of carbons as their backbone. They can also be cyclical. (ie. formed a closed chain)

What are aromatic compounds?

A

They are compounds that contain a benzene ring (or more generally their pi electrons are delocalized over the entire structure). They are normally quite fragrant, hence the name.

What are the IUPAC rules? (6)

A
  1. Find the longest chain 2. Determine the functional group, which determines the suffix of the name. 3. Identify side chains (these names are placed before the stem of the compound) 4. Specify the specific position of the substituents or functional groups on the parent chain. 5. If they are more than 1 of the same type of constituent we use prefixes 6.Order substituent groups in alphabetical order
