Alkenes Flashcards
What are organic compounds?
Organic compound, any of a large class of chemical compounds in which one or more atoms of carbon are covalently linked to atoms of other elements,
What is a homologous series?
A homologous series is a family of compounds with the same general formula and similar chemical properties.
The alkanes and alkenes contain the elements ___ and ___ only. The alcohols and carboxylic acids contain ____, ____, ____.
Carbon Hydrogen Carbon Hydrogen Oxygen
What is a functional group?
A functional group is an atom or group of atoms that gives a compound its characteristic chemical properties.
What are the functional groups in the 3 homologous series?
What are alkanes?
Homologous series. there are many compounds in the family. All are hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH2n+2, where n is the number of carbon atoms in a molecule. The simplest alkane is methane, CH4 with 1 Carbon atom.
The formula of one alkene differs from the formula of the next by a ___ group.

What do structural formulae show?
Shows how all the atoms in a molecule are joined together, by drawing lines between the atoms to represent the bonds.
Alkanes are said to be ____ due to their single carbon bonds.
Saturated
Explain the trend in boiling and melting points for alkanes.
Increases as you introduced more carbons.
Comment the solubility of Alkanes.
They are insoluble but they are soluble in organic solvents.
Comment on the density of alkanes.
Increase down the series, but still float as their density will still be lower than water which is 1.
Comment on the viscosity of alkanes.
The Compounds become more viscous down the series.
Comment on the flammability of the alkanes.
The compounds become less flammable as the molecules evaporate easily.
