Definitions Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound containing only carbon and hydrogen atoms.
What is a saturated compound?
A compound in which all of the bonds between carbon atoms are single bonds.
What is an unsaturated compound?
A compound in which there is at least one double and/or between carbon atoms.
What is a functional group?
An atom or group of atoms that form the centre of chemical activity in the molecule.
What is an homologous series?
A series of similar compounds which have the same functional group and have the same general formula, in which each member differs from the previous one by a single CH^2 unit.
Define isomers.
Compounds having the same molecular formula but different structural formulae.
Molecular formula.
Atom count.
Structural formula.
Simplest ratio of atoms.
What is a substituent?
An atom or group of atoms that has replaced a hydrogen on the molecule.
Define redundancy.
When the substituent position cannot be anywhere else, we don’t use numbers.
What is an Isomer?
A compound having the same molecular formula but different structural formula.
Define aliphatic compound.
An aliphatic compound is an organic compound containing carbon and hydrogen joined together in straight chains, branched chains, or non-aromatic rings.
Define cyclo-aliphatic compound.
This is a closed hydrocarbon chain that forms aliphatic rings. The hydrocarbons are fully saturated.
Define aromatic compound.
Ring structures of conjugated unsaturated hydrogens.
