General Knowledge Flashcards
Pro-apoptotic protein?
Bax
Anti-apoptotic protein?
Bcl-2
What signals the extrinsic apoptotic pathway (3)?
- FasL binds FasR (CD95)
- Perforin from killer T
- Granzyme B from killer T
What attracts neutrophils to areas of inflammation?
CILK
```
C5a
IL-8
LTB4
Kallikrein
bacterial products too
Vascular structure that promote rolling?
E-selectin
P-selectin
Vascular structure that promote tight binding of leukocytes?
ICAM-1
Vascular structure that promote diapedesis?
PECAM-1
What organisms cause caseating granulomas?
TB
Fungal infections
What diseases cause noncaseating granulomas(8)?
Syphilis M. leprae Cat-scratch dz (bartonella henselae) Sarcoidosis Crohn's Wegener's Churg-Strauss Berryliosis/silicosis
What are the 6 types of amyloidosis?
- AL - Light chains; assoc. with multiple myeloma
- AA - seen in chronic inflamm dz (like RA); Amyloid A accumulations
- Dialysis - B2 microglobulin (presents as carpal tunnel/joint issues)
- Heritable - TTR gene mutation (transthyretin)
- Age-related - same as heritable, but deposition of normal TTR (takes longer)
- Organ-specific - deposition in one organ (seen in Alz b-amyloid deposition in brain)
What is a better general prognostic factor, tumor stage or grade?
Stage (i.e. are there mets/LN involvement)
What is tumor stage?
Degree of localization/spread (TMN = tumor size, mets, LN)
What is tumor grade?
How bad does it look under the microscope?
What is another name for TNF-a?
cachexin - causes inflammation response and chronic levels = cachexia
What 3 cytokines cause cachexia?
TNF-a
IFN-gamma
IL-6
