how long should a surgical hand wash last?
3-5 minutes
what are the steps of a surgical hand wash?
- carry out hygienic hand wash with soap and water
- use right elbow to put 5ml alcohol based hand wash into left hand
- spend 5 seconds disinfecting right fingernails in the gel
- spend 10-15 seconds covering right forearm and elbow in the hand wash using circular movements
- repeat on opposite side
- complete hygienic hand wash again with hand rub
- wait until hands are dry to put on gloves
