Q

Tell me about yourself!

A

• I am a sophomore in Wharton studying finance. I am doing also a concentration in actuarial science and probably a data science minor.
Highschool I went to a nice public school in Georgia, then I applied and got in here.
Here, I am involved in Wharton Women (I planned their first big event this year, but that’s over now, so it’s calm) and the new club, Penn Accounting Society - and I am looking to join more.
Job-wise I like finance. Last year I did an internship in Mexico social entrepreneurship venture capital, was great with learning consulting for large firms on social impact but wish I could have learned more valuation concepts.

eg. I’m hoping to do more finance internships, but I want to get a great grip on the concepts now -

Overcame a challenge

A

Summer I worked at Ashoka, a social entrepreneurship venture capital nonprofit,. This was in Spanish which I have been studying for a while for fun, but I realized fast that people talk a lot quicker than my teachers. Or like Netflix dubbed Spanish. I arrived in Mexico a week early, so I just started talking to everyone - my doorman was my age. We became friends, and he had friends. Met some guy with his puppy, and he was a singer and actor. He invited me to some events. I talked with everyone at the office. It was not that difficult to catch up. I is a little unsafe to be so outgoing, but the city is much more safe than people expect it to be. People move at a more relaxed pace, so they are willing to talk and enjoy life with a stranger. I went to workshops (digital advertising OXXO’s takeover) taught at local universities - and there was a presentation component. Was recognized for hard work… and promoted to project leader of the ASN Newsletter.

• Last year, I was on a team for PennSEM - social entrepreneurship, and the goal of the program was to start our own company. We did: we started like a subscription gift box company that promoted mental health awareness - pretty generic, but implemented well. The last stage, we made it to the SI360 National Pitch Competition, and we were having issues with our slides on the last day. This is just a design issue. We had a great artist on the team, and I am good at design too. And then we have this hard smart accountant, and she wanted to have the slides very business and professional, but our startup’s image was cute and fun. It was a small problem but I knew it had to be decided, so I called a meeting basically and gave like 10 options for the whole team to look at, and one by one we went over them until we found the right option. Everyone was happy. We did that for a couple ideas after that as well. It is always great to consider everyone’s ideas, but be decisive. ,

Q

Unpopular opinion or leadership

A

Summer I worked at Ashoka, a social entrepreneurship venture capital nonprofit,.
I was a strategic partnership intern which meant I worked on projects with large companies (Johnson &; Johnson, JP Morgan, UBS) who wanted to partner with Ashoka. and I managed ASN Network - a network of successful individuals who supported social entrepreneurs with investment and advice. I realized that Ashoka was looking to these ASNs more for their money more than anything. They have a very stringent process for evaulation of entrepreneurs, but they allow anyone to become an ASN. (1) takes value out of being an ASN. (2) not very moral. losing the “strategic value” of advice. I porposed this to my manager, and we scheduled some talks with global offices (UK, Germany, some existing ASNs) and then I became project manager of engagement activities. I started the first ASN Newsletter - that updates ASNs on entrepreneurs and how they can connect. And planned 2 years of events and incorporated into global summit things.

Q

What role do you play in a team

A

Creative and organizer
As a leader, I like to delegate tasks because I have learned over the years that I have a strength in finding other people’s stengths and intersts and integrating them to form something amazing that acheives all of our goals.

As a team member, I am a diligent worker and an idea generator.

(1) Boxy and how everyone had skills to offer and complement each other
- When we were creating the business model (Irene) is already certified accountant - wonderful things. Helped with finances
- TJ (international) has lived everywhere Cali, Hawaii, South Korea, Asia - was instrumental in developing target audience with evidence and with convincability.
- In marketing stage, Emma (artistic)
- Me (organizer, Final editor) was able to engage people where they wanted to and really able to observe an A+ team come together.

Q

Why data science?

A

Doing industry overviews - It sucks that you have no information unless someone has already analyzed it and then you have to trust what they have said. You have limitless options for analysis if you have the data yourself- just be true to yourself, and you will get solid information.

Q

Team Conflict and Resolution

A

Penn SEM Boxy: presentation that we were making - where team members clashed between professional and staying “on brand” and the original solution was a mismatch between the two where each slide was different. And no-one like that one. I was able to solve the issue by holding a meeting where everyone decided on one style with all the rules laid out, and together we revised each slide to come into accordance

Q

Failure

A

Academics! Legal Studies I got like an 80 on the first test because I didn’t word things clearly and that felt bad cuz I really knew all the information. For the second one, I could look at examples, find the good parts of the studying and build off of more - contact professor for help and ideas - and I brought the grade up to an A somehow;

Weakness

A

Memorization (but I combat that by just concentration - physically caffeine, and writing things down meticulously, keeping a calendar religiously being the most organized - actually helps with my excel skills);

Demanding attention in large groups if there is no structure- so I try to make structure, raising my hand, waiting for calm. I’m better one-on-one I suppose; In band i got a megaphone to help me. There’s a lot of outside aid and creative solutions.

Going deep into political news that I’m not interested in.

Strengths

A

Aries: Low sense of danger so I’m ok under pressure often. Persistent and have a lot of ideas and analytical. There was a guy Andy Rachleff founder of a investing automatic advisor app who teaches at Stanford sometimes. He says entrepreneurs are not risky because they don’t think what they’re doing is taking a risk. They are more analytical. I think that was interesting.

Q

My favorite leadership experience:

A

I really loved being logistics chair in charge of the Wharton Women’s Annual Dinner event which is the club’s largest event of the year. It includes a career fair, a catered dinner, and a speaker event. And it is great way for women to connect with recruiters and other club members and enjoy a great time. Even though I came in not sure if I had the experience to execute such a large event, I learned a lot from my mentor, the president of Wharton Women and it was great.

I liked it because I was able to organize with all the other committees of the club - marketing, finance, communications in order to execute it and it was really cool to see how these people fit together with different skillsets to achieve a common goal.

Contacting the speaker, ordering the food, and selling tickets were all new things for me. And I learned how to be super detailed and dedicated to making everything was ok.

Q

When did things not go as planned?

A

WIEP trip winter 2018 we had a research question: How to tech companies respond to changes in data privacy concerns. Jesse and Nick asked them a question and they said well we don’t work with data at all so we can’t tell you. So we had to reevaluate everything. held team meetings. Scheduled meetings with professor and TA to see where should we go now and bounce ideas off of them. My team finally decided to stick with the question because we had talked with people like Safra Catz, finance head of ORACLE who uses so much data that they can’t operate in China since the gov wants a backdoor. Or the european regulation on data had been mentioned, so minor bump but with fast realignment and communication we were able to move forward once again.
