What are the 3 zones of adrenal coerex?
Zona golemrulosa: aldosterone (mineralocorticoid)
Zona fasciculata: cortisol (glucocorticoids)
Zone reticularis sex steroids
What does aldosterone do?
Aldosterone causes retention of sodium to try to conserve circulating blood volume
What causes aldosterone release?
Renin angiotensin system
Kidney releases renin, liver angiotensin and form angiotensin 1
Converted to angiotensin 2 in lungs
Causes release of aldosterone
Cortisol: many of its actions do the opposite of ………..
Insulin
2 main actions of cortisol?
Enhance protein to glucose breakdown
Reduce inflammatory processes
What is a tumor of the renal medulla called?
Phenochromocytoma
What are the major effects of adrenaline/noradrenaline?
Gycocoen and fat breakdown, increased cardiac force and rate, vasoconstriction, increased alertness, increased metabolic rate
