Demodex Flashcards
Give 3 reasons for adult demodecosis to appear?
Inmunosupresión: iatrogenic, endocrinopathy (diabetes, hypothyroid, hyperadrenocorticism), nutrition, estrus
Difference between generalised and localised demodex?
Localised: less than 5 nodules, may be pruritic, usually less than a year old
Generalised: large area, multiple areas on body infected, secondary infection
How do we diagnose demodex?
Skin scrapes (as live deep) or hair pluck round sensitive areas. Should also test for secondary infection (bacteria and fungal)
Only licensed treatment for generalised demodex? When is it contraindicated?
Amitraz
Do not use if deep pyoderma or with otherMAO inhibitors
How do we treat localised demodex?
Not always requires
Topical benzoyl peroxide, amitraz or rotenone
