Gene Expression Measurement Methods Flashcards
A technique that permits visualization of molecules (mostly protein) in fixed biological samples (tissue or cell)
Immunoflorescence
A type of immunofluorescence that uses a single, primary antibody, chemically linked to a fluorophore
Primary (Direct) Immunofluorescence
A type of immunofluorescence that uses two antibodies: the unlabeled primary antibody which specifically binds the target molecule, and the secondary antibody which carries the fluorophore, recognizes the primary antibody, and binds to it
Secondary (Indirect) Immunofluorescence
The protein of interest in immunofluorescence
Antigen
In immunofluorescence, the part of the antigen recognized by the antibody
Epitope
The identification of molecules of interest using specifically designed molecular probes, which bind to the target protein (by antibody) or DNA/RNA (by base pairing), and can be detected
Blotting
Blotting to detect DNA
Southern Blot
Blotting to detect RNA
Northern Blot
Blotting to detect protein
Western Blot
A technique for detecting mRNA in fixed tissues, to detect gene expression
In Situ Hybridization
A technique for measuring the mRNA level for the gene of interest using PCR
qPCR
A technique for analyzing the abundance of mRNA for all the genes in parallel
RNA Sequencing
