gene expression Flashcards
direction of template strand
3’ to 5’
direction of RNA polymerase
5’ to 3’
post trc modification of mRNA in prokarytes
doesnt happen
post trc modification of mRNA in eukaryotes
RNA splicing, 5’ end capping, addition of polyA tail
what is splicing?
the removal of introns and joining of exons
what are snRNPs
small nuclear RNA and proteins
what is spliceosome?
complex of snRNPS that remove introns from pre DNA
what is RNA capping?
covalent attachment of a modified guanosine to the 5’ end of the mRNA
when does RNA capping occur?
during transcription after the first 20-25 nts have been transcribed
what does RNA capping do?
allows proper exiting of mRNA from the nucleus to cytoplasm AND enables ribosome binding to mRNA
what does polyA tail do?
stabilizes mRNA in cytosol
