gene expression Flashcards
what is mRNA?
carries a copy of the DNA code from the nucleus to the ribosome.
what is tRNA?
carries its specific amino acid to the ribosome.
what is rRNA?
carries ribosomal RNA and proteins from the ribosome (site of protein synthesis)
what is a codon?
group of three bases and each one codes for an amino acid
how does RNA differ from DNA?
RNA is single stranded and DNA is double stranded
RNA is made from ribose sugar and DNA is made from deoxyribose sugar
RNA has the base uracil while DNA has the base thymine.
how can different mature mRNA transcripts be produced?
through alternative splicing - it depends on which exons are included in mature mRNA
how is a phenotype determined?
by the proteins produced as the result of gene expression or by environmental factors
how are polypeptides formed?
Amino acids are linked by peptide bonds
