cellular differentiation Flashcards
what is Cellular differentiation?
process by which a cell expresses certain genes to produce proteins characteristic for that type of cell which allows a cell to carry out specialised functions.
what are meristems?
regions of unspecialised cells in PLANTS that can self-renew/differentiate
what are stem cells?
regions of unspecialised cells in ANIMALS that can self-renew/differentiate
tissue stem cells are multipoint, what does this mean?
they can differentiate into all of the types of cell found in a particular tissue type
what are the two types of stem cells?
embryonic and tissue stem cells
how does certain genes being expressed result in different cell types?
different proteins are synthesised resulting in different cell types
what are some therapeutic use of stem cell?
to repair damaged or diseased organs, for example bone marrow transplants, corneal transplants, and skin grafts for burns.
what are ethical issues relating to the use of embryonic stem cells?
it involves the destruction of an embryo
