socialisation more difficult for boys. role model (father) not as readily available. girls have easy access to mother, father traditionally at work. rebel against socialisation from mother, find all male peer groups for chances to develop masculinity. reward masc behaviours - aggressions, toughness etc
Heidensohn (1985)
less opportunity for crime. women controlled in all aspects of life. Home - dependent on parents, dont stay out as late socialisation involves the home, adult - domestic roles. Work - glass ceiling effect.
Public - media reports of crime against women increase fear of going out after dark alone
Pollak (1950)
claimed men in criminal justice system have protective attitude towards women so are more lenient.
Pat Carlen
argues system biased against women. those seen as ‘good’ less likely to be charged than those seen as ‘bad’, e.g. have kids in care.
