Gender Identity & Gender Roles Flashcards
Which sex chromosome is always given by the female? And which by the male?
The x chromosome is given by the female. Male provides either X or Y.
What are androgens?
Male sex hormones, one of which is testosterone.
What does the Y chromosome do?
Leads to the development of male gonads (testes).
What do testes produce?
Testosterone, leading to distinct sex characteristics.
What is Klinefelter syndrome?
A sex-chromosomal abnormality. Happens when there is an extra X chromosome in males. Impacts development of male sex characteristics such as small testes, infertility, enlarged breasts. Often are taller than peers, cognitive deficits in area of language development.
What is Turner syndrome?
Loss of X chromosome material in females. Short stature, underdeveloped ovaries, normal intelligence, extra folds of skin on neck (webbed), lower hairline at back of neck, kidney problems, nonverbal learning deficits, behavioral problems.
What is gender identity?
Psychological sense of being male or female or neither (dichotomous).
What is gender assignment?
Labeling of newborns as male or female.
What is hermaphrodism?
Possession of ovarian and testicular tissue. Usually assumes gender identity and gender role assigned at birth.
What is intersexuality?
Possession of gonads of one gender but external genetalia that are ambiguous or typical of the other gender.
What is Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia?
Lack of certain enzyme. Result is increased production of androgens. Girls may have normal internal structures but masculinized external structures and characteristics (deep voice). In boys it means extremely early puberty as early as age 2. Significant variation in symptom presentation.
What is androgen insensitivity syndrome?
Effects chromosomal males (XY). Prenatally insensitive to androgens. Genitals do not become masculinized and they are usually raised as females.
What is Dominican Republic Syndrome?
Effects chromosomal males (XY). Genetic enzyme disorder prevents testosterone from masculinizing the external genitals.
What is transgenderism?
When a person’s external body doesn’t match how they feel.
What is transsexualism?
Person may feel trapped in the body of the “wrong gender”. Transsexuals “transition” from one sex to another.
