What is the difference between sex and gender
Sex = biological differences between males and females
Gender = societal construct, the expectations of men and women from society

- particular gendered behaviour was biological
- the need to procreate requires men to be promiscuous and women to be nurturing and stay faithful to men in order to raise their children
Describe parsons biological view on gender
- women are expressive whereas men naturally have instrumental roles
- Gender roles are natural but reinforced through socialisation
Explain why Mead believes gender is socially constructed
Cultural conditioning:
Found gender roles in tribal societies (Tchambuli people) are the reverse of those in the west
What did sociologist Statham find about gender socialisation that supports the idea that gender is socially constructed
Parents who deliberately tried to avoid gender stereotyping their children found it impossible to overcome cultural pressures on their children to behave in a certain way
