What is gender dysphoria
- Absence of congruence between one’s birth-assigned sex and one’s gender identity
- Diagnosis (especially in societies that emphasize there are only two genders) can be stigmatizing, marginalizing, victimizing and medicalizing
- causes distress or impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning
Etiology of gender dysphoria
○ Proposed that an excess or absence of testosterone during the fetal period has a correlation to gender identity
○ Importance of early childhood experiences and the family environment
Criteria for gender affirming surgery
§ Persistent, well documented gender dysphoria
§ Capacity to make a fully informed decision and consent for treatment
§ Age of majority in a given country
§ If significant medical or mental concerns are present, they must be well controlled
§ 12 continuous months of hormone therapy
Sex vs gender
sex: biological attributes - but doesnt manifest in a binary
gender: socially constructed roles, stereotypes, constructs, history, identity
