gender bias Flashcards
what is universality?
finding that can be applied to everyone regards less of race, gender, etc.
what is gender bias?
treating sexes different from one anther
what is alpha bias?
overestimating/extravagating the the differences between men and women
give 2 examples of alpha bias
male promiscuity is seen as natural where as in females it goes against their nature
women going to uni would shrivel their ovaries
what is beta bias:?
underestimating/ignoring the differences between men and women
when does beta bias occur?
when there are no female ppt but the findings are applied to both men and women
how is Kohlberg’s moral development theory beta biased?
only had american male ppt but said females moral developed the same way but other research has found that male are the result of principles whereas women’s morals are due to care
why is the fight or flight response beta bias?
they only experimented on male animals due to fluctuating of hormones in females
what does Taylor et al suggest about the fight or flight response?
females have evolved to inhibit this response and rather focus on tending and befriending (care and defense networks)
why is Freud’s Electra complex beta biased?
he says females experience penis envy and ignores that males may also experience womb envy (assume both want to be male)
what is Androcentrism?
a consequence of beta bias when the male behavior is set as the norm making female behavior abnormal leading to pathologist and misunderstanding
why in pre-menstrual syndrome androcentic?
sees male anger as responses to external pressure but female anger is seen as PMS and stereotypical
what are the implications of gender bias?
- misleading assumptions
- scientific justification for stereotypes and discrimination
- normal for women to be abnormal
why is there sexism in the research process?
- lack of women at senior level
- male researchers work is more likely to be published
- studies finding differences are more likely to be published then those saying genders are the same
- in lab experiments females are morel likely to be interview by male researchers
what is reflexivity?
recognizing the effect or their own assumptions and views on the research
