what is culture?
an integrated system of learned behavioural patterns which are characteristics of the members of the society
what is the emics?
a set of assumptions particular to a specific culture which are likely to be misinterpreted
what is etics?
when we assume behaviour to be universal leading to imposed etic and ethnocentrism
what is imposed etic?
applying a construct from one culture to another inappropriately
what is ethnocentrism?
when a researcher assumes hat their own culturally specific practices or ideas are natural or right

what is cultural relativism?
the understanding that the culture which findings are collected in, and so whether the findings can be applied elsewhere
why can we not avoid cultural bias?
not all cultures are the same
why is it important to do cross-cultural research?
to understand different cultures, to counter scientific racism, to improve the validity
what is indigenous research?
to understand a culture by immersing in it
what is Afrocentrism?
assumes all black people have roots in African so psychological research should be centred there

identifying variations in different cultures
what is trans-cultural replication?
