what is hard determinism?
A
all human behaviour has a cause which should be able to be identified and described

A
all human actions have a cause, but humans have conscious mental control over how they behave

A
biological factors influence our behaviour as many behaviours and characteristics are thought to have a genetic basis

what is environmental determinism?
A
all behaviour is the result of conditioning and choice is merely a reinforcement

what is psychic determinism?
A
human thoughts and behaviour is controlled by unconscious conflict and innate needs

what are the strengths?
A
- consistent with the aims of science
- used in treatments
- establish cause and effect
- no one would choose to have a mental disorder

what are the weaknesses?
A
- doesn’t work with the legal system
- unfalsifiable as the cause may just have not been discovered
- socially sensitive
