How is gender socially constructed?
- institution and socially constructed
- justifies sexual stratification
- purpose of gender is to construct women as a group to be subordinate to men
What is biological sex?
- used to assign gender at birth
- according to biological and physical anatomy
What is gender identity?
- refers to a person’s innate felt sense of being male or female
- or both/neither
What is gender expression?
- external
- based on individual and societal expectations and conceptions
- clothing, body language, mannerisms, how we speak, how we play
- depends on context
What is sexual orientation?
- romantic or sexual attraction to people of a specific gender
What is gender variance/gender non-conformity?
- behaviours and interests which fit outside what is normal for a child or adult’s assign biological sex
What is gender dysphoria?
- person experiences discomfort or distress because there is a mismatch between their biological sex and gender identity
Define transgender
- gender identity does not match assigned birth sex
- does not imply any specific sexual orientation
Define gender fluidity
- conveys wider, more flexible range of gender expressions
- do not feel confined to a certain gender
Define genderqueer
- growing in usage
- blurring of lines surrounding societies rigid views of gender
- embrace fluidity of gender expression
- may not identify as male or female but as both/neither/blend
