Glasgow Coma Scale
■Measure the severity of injury and the level of consciousness
■Easy enough that it could be universally
used in a reliable manner - count on uniformity
■Quick measure that could be repeated often to spot changes
■Could be used to guide treatment decisions
GCS recommended administration time
immediately post injury and at 30 minutes.
GCS severity ratings
Score of 3 to 8- Severe
Score of 9 to 12- Moderate
Score of 13 to 15- Mild
GCS eye opening response
1= no response
2= eye opening to pain
3= eye opening to speech
4= spontaneous eye opening
GCS best motor response
1=no response
2=extension of limbs
3=flexion of limbs
4=withdraws from stimulus (can’t localize the pain)
5= localizes sensory stimulus (tries to push hand away on stimulus)
6= obeys commands
GCS best verbal response
1= no response
2= incomprehensible
3= confused
4= oriented x3
