Awareness & Social Cognition Flashcards
2 models of awareness
- Self knowledge- similar to intellectual awareness, understanding one’s own strengths/weaknesses
- Online awareness- similar to emergent and anticipatory awareness, task and situational dependence
Intellectual awareness
Knowing what the deficit is
Emerging awareness
Recognizing how deficits play out when doing a task
Anticipatory awareness
Ability to anticipate that deficits will make tasks difficult so you set yourself up w/ strategies
3 domains of social cognition
- Social perception: perceptual processing of social information such as faces and emotional expressions
- Social understanding: grasping others’cognitive/affective states
- Social decision-making: planning behaviors taking into consideration others’, in addition to one’s own, goals
Deficits in conversational and narrative discourse
•failure to address the perspective of others
•reduced comprehension of social implications
•inaccurate or poorly structured discourse
•disinhibited communication behaviors
•difficulty responding to open-ended questions
•lack of macrostructure, cohesion, and informativeness
Social cognition general treatment approaches
•Metacognitive awareness and strategy training
•Insight building
•Partner training
•Personally relevant goals and goal attainment scaling
Group and project-based learning can be helpful. Practice both listening and speaking roles.
