What is GBS
A
Gillian-Bare syndrome is a poly neuropathy of the lower motor neurones. It is a rare and serious condition of the PNS, symptoms usually develop after a minor infection such as a cold, sore throat or gastroenteritis. It is where the immune system attacks motor neurones causing them to become inflamed and stop working

Symptoms?
A
Pain numbness tingling progressive weakness coordination problems and unsteadiness
Peak at about week 4

Prognosis
A
Good with 80% making a full recovery however may take up to a year. Can be some long term complications such as loss of sensation, loss of balance, not being able to walk unaided.

Physiotherapy treatment
A
- stretching to prevent contracture all structures including the nervous system, patients should be encouraged to join in where possible
- use of a continuous passive motion machine
- pain management r.e. MDT
- positioning frequent changes to prevent contractures JD pressure sores e.g. Wedge placed under thoracic region to prevent scapula retraction
- respiratory care pt may be ventilated
- strengthening exercises
- orthosis
- mobility aids
