Brain Injury Flashcards
What is a TBI?
A TBI is an injury that occurs when there’s a dict high energy blow to the head or when the brain comes into contact with the inside of the skull as a result of a sudden acceleration or deceleration of the body
Brain and spinal cord anatomy
Brain and spinal cord are suspended within 3 layers of membranes known as the meninges and are further protected by a cerebral spinal fluid between the inner 2 layers, the arachnoid and the pia mater. The outer layer = dura mater is the most substantial layer and provides most of the mechanical strength of the meninges. The primary function of the meninges is to protect the CNS.
What is an aneurysm?
It is an abnormal ballooning of a cerebral artery usually due to a congenital or acquired weakness in the wall of the vessel
What a cerebral tumour?
It is an inter cranial solid neoplasm, a tumour within the brain or central spinal canal. Created by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division. A tumour can benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Usually detection occurs in advanced stages when the presence of the tumour has caused unexplained symptoms.
What are the signs of a brain tumour?
Depends on the size and location of the tumour.
Headaches
Migraines
Focal neurological dysfunction
What is primary and metastatic tumour?
Diagnosis?
Primary tumour starts off in the brain
A metastatic tumour spreads to the brain from another part of the body.
Diagnosis by CT or MRI
