screening!
urine culture at prenatal visit; vaginal/anal culture at 35 weeks

treatment for GBS
A
penicillin – at least 2 doses before birth
during labour: IV penicillin 5 million units, 2.5 million units Q4hrs
acceptable alternatives: Ampicillin, Clindamycin

effects of untreated GBS - maternal
A
preterm labour, spontaneous abortion, spreading infection, death

effects of untreated GBS - fetal
A
preterm/stillbirth, pneumonia, sepsis, meningitis
