Definition: Gallbladder qi insufficient, where Gallbladder fails in judgment and decision making.
Clinical manifestations: dizziness, blurred vision, nervousness, timidity, startles easily, paranoia (or suspicion), lack of courage and initiative, Indecisiveness (difficulty making
decisions when needed), insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, shortness of breath

Pulse thready and wiry, or weak
Key points:
- Timidity, easily startled, paranoia, lack of courage,
- plus qi deficiency signs and symptoms
Gallbladder Heat Pattern
Definition: heat accumulation and stagnation inside the Gallbladder, aka “Heat congestion in the Gallbladder”
Clinical manifestations: Irritability, short temper, tinnitus or ear pain, headache, insomnia or dream-disturbed sleep, hypochondriac distention pain, anorexia, bitter

Key Points:
- Bitter taste in the mouth,
- dry throat,
- dizziness and tinnitus.
- Or, alternating chills and fever with jaundice,
- plus interior heat signs and symptoms
Etiology and pathogenesis:
- exopathogens or emotional stress
- lead to qi stagnation
- that transforms to heat
major clinical manifestations GB
- Bitter taste in the mouth
- Jaundice
- Timidity and paranoia
- Other signs and symptoms related to Gallbladder:
● Indigestion, hypochondriac pain, headache, dizziness, tinnitus, ear pain, and
blurry vision
GB stagnation with Phlegm disturbance
Definition: phlegm-heat disturbing the
Gallbladder aka “heat-phlegm in the
Gallbladder” or “Depressed Gallbladder with phlegm-harassing”
Clinical manifestations: Fright, timidity, susceptibility, easily startled, panic attacks, paranoia, irritability, restlessness, dizziness, tinnitus, nausea, bitter taste in the mouth,
chest distress, hypochondriac distention, insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, palpitations
Tongue: Red, thick yellow greasy tc
Pulse: Slippery and wiry
Note: Patient often has a history of mental illness
Key Points:
- Fright, easily startled, panic attacks, paranoia,
- insomnia,
- dizziness,
- chest distress,
- hypochondriac distention,
- bitter taste in the mouth,
- plus heat-phlegm signs and
symptoms
Etiology and pathogenesis:
- emotional stress
- causes qi stagnation
- generates phlegm
- phlegm accumulation produces fire
GB fx
There Gallbladder is responsible for two main physiological functions:
- Stores and excretes bile, assisting in digestion
- Controls decision-making and judgment
GB heat vs LV fire blazing
Gallbladder Stagnation with Phlegm Disturbance
vs.
Gallbladder Heat
GB stag with phlegm
- has phlegm.
- no courage, susceptibility, panic, easily startled
- hypochondriac distension
GB heat
- no slippery pulse
Gallbladder Stagnation with Phlegm Disturbance vs. Heart Fire Blazing
GB stagnation with phlegm is shao yang, alternating chills/fever
Gallbladder Stagnation with Phlegm Disturbance
vs.
Phlegm-Fire Harassing the Heart
phlegm fire harassing ht has palpitations
