Gallbladder Qi Deficiency Pattern 胆气虚

A

Definition: Gallbladder qi insufficient, where Gallbladder fails in judgment and decision making.

Clinical manifestations: dizziness, blurred vision, nervousness, timidity, startles easily, paranoia (or suspicion), lack of courage and initiative, Indecisiveness (difficulty making
decisions when needed), insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, shortness of breath

Tongue: pale
Pulse thready and wiry, or weak

Key points:
- Timidity, easily startled, paranoia, lack of courage,
- plus qi deficiency signs and symptoms

Gallbladder Heat Pattern

A

Definition: heat accumulation and stagnation inside the Gallbladder, aka “Heat congestion in the Gallbladder”

Clinical manifestations: Irritability, short temper, tinnitus or ear pain, headache, insomnia or dream-disturbed sleep, hypochondriac distention pain, anorexia, bitter
taste in the mouth, dry mouth and thirst, red face, nausea and vomiting, constipation, scanty dark yellow urine, alternating chills and fever, yellow sclera and skin

Tongue: Red with yellow coating
Pulse: Rapid wiry

Key Points:
- Bitter taste in the mouth,
- dry throat,
- dizziness and tinnitus.
- Or, alternating chills and fever with jaundice,
- plus interior heat signs and symptoms

Etiology and pathogenesis:
- exopathogens or emotional stress
- lead to qi stagnation
- that transforms to heat

GB stagnation with Phlegm disturbance

A

Definition: phlegm-heat disturbing the
Gallbladder aka “heat-phlegm in the
Gallbladder” or “Depressed Gallbladder with phlegm-harassing”

Clinical manifestations: Fright, timidity, susceptibility, easily startled, panic attacks, paranoia, irritability, restlessness, dizziness, tinnitus, nausea, bitter taste in the mouth,
chest distress, hypochondriac distention, insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, palpitations

Tongue: Red, thick yellow greasy tc
Pulse: Slippery and wiry

Note: Patient often has a history of mental illness

Key Points:
- Fright, easily startled, panic attacks, paranoia,
- insomnia,
- dizziness,
- chest distress,
- hypochondriac distention,
- bitter taste in the mouth,
- plus heat-phlegm signs and
symptoms

Etiology and pathogenesis:
- emotional stress
- causes qi stagnation
- generates phlegm
- phlegm accumulation produces fire
