- the first instance being Pope Leo XIII speaking out in favour of oppressed factory workers (Rerum Novarum)

A
- Vatican II in the 1960’s (Pope John XXIII) Gaudium et Spes uses the creation accounts to emphasise that we are created in God’s Image, therefore we are created equally and should work for peace
- attempt to work for peace (“peace be with you” - john 20) and the pope prays every mass to end conflict
- working for justice (“peace is the fruit of love which goes beyond what justice can provide”)

A
- believes in the parable of the good Samaritan, working with the poor to create sustainable communities
- St Vincent de Paul, ‘love your neighbour’, visit and befriend the vulnerable
