Gastrointestinal Flashcards
Duodenum
Neutralizes acid in food from the stomach and mixes pancreatic and biliary secretions with food
3 components of the small intestine:
Duodenum, jejunum, ileum
Jejunum
Absorbs water, electrolytes, and nutrients
Ileum
Absorbs bile and intrinsic factors to be recycled
Transports food from mouth to stomach
Esophagus
Gallbladder:
Stores and releases bile into the duodenum to assist with digestion
Liver:
Bile is produced; assists with RBC and vitamin K production; regulates serum level of carbs, protein, and fats
Pancreas:
Exocrine - secretes bicarbonate and digestive enzymes into the duodenum
Endocrine - secretes insulin, glucagon, and other hormones into the blood to regulate serum glucose levels
GERD:
The result of an incompetent lower esophageal sphincter (LES) that allows reflux of gastric contents. This is a backwards movement of the stomach acids
The inflammation of the gastric mucosa or inner layer of the stomach
Gastritis
Refers to the inflammation of the gallbladder that may be acute or chronic
Chloecystitis or chloelithiasis
Continues to absorb water and electrolytes; stores and eliminates undirected food as feces (6-large intestine)
Ascending, descending, transverse colon, sigmoid, rectum, anus
