GERD description
A
backflow of gastric and duodenal contents into esophagus
caused by incompetant lower esoph. sphincter (LES), pyloric or motility disorder

GERD assessment
A
Heartburn/epigastric pain
dyspepsia
nausea / regurgitation
pain and difficulty swallowing
hypersalivation

GERD interventions
A
pt is to avoid factors the decrease LES pressure or cause esoph. irritation (no peppermint, chocolate, coffee, fried, fatty foods, sodas, ETOH, smoking)
low fat high fiber diet
no eating or drinking 2 hours before bed
avoid tight clothes
elevate HoB 6-8 in
avoid anticholinergic meds that delay stomach emptying, and NSAIDs
instruct on common antacids, H2 antagonists, PPIs
