Gastrocnemius and Soleus Flashcards
Distal attachment Gastrocnemius
Tendocalcaneus attaches to posterior aspect of the calcaneus. A bursa lies between the tendon and the upper part of the calcaneus
Proximal attachment Gastrocnemius
Medial head- popliteal surface of medial condyle of femur, behind the adductor tubercle
Lateral head- lateral surface of lateral femoral condyle superior and posterior to the epicondyle
Each head also attaches to the capsule of the knee joint
Proximal attachment Soleus

Upper third (including head) of posterior surface of fibula
A fibrous arching band between these attachments on the tibia and fibula
Distal attachment Soleus
Posterior surface of calcaneus by the tendocalcaneus
Nerve supply Gastrocnemius and Soleus (and Plantaris)
Tibial nerve S1,S2
