Gastritis Flashcards
What is gastritis?
Inflammation of the stomach
Pathology can be
Autoimmune
Bacterial
Chemical injury
(ABC)
Autoimmune pathology
Autoanitbodies target parietal cells - atrophy and loss of specialised gastric epithelial cells - decreased acid secretion and loss intrinsic factor
Loss of intrinsic factor results in
Vitamin B12 deficiency - pernicious anaemia
Bacterial pathology
Helicobacter Pylori - acute and chronic inflammation - urease produces ammonia (alkali) - increased pH causes increase in acid secretion
Helicobacter Pylori
Gram negative bacteria found in mucus on surface of gastric epithelium
Initiates acute or chronic inflammation
Secretes urease
Urease
Enzyme secreted by H. Pylori, hydrolyses urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide
Causes of chemical injury
Drugs (NSAID’s)
Alcohol
Bile reflux
