Gases Flashcards

1
Q

Vapor Pressure

A

Pressure of the gas form of a liquid. Exists all over at the surface of the liquid.

Non-Volatile: VP = XsolventVpsolvent

Volatile: VP = (xsoluteVpsolute) + (xsolventVpsolvent)

Q

Ideal gas law

A

PV = nRT

Two assumptions:

  1. Gas molecules are of negligble volume compared to the volume the gas occupies
  2. All intermolecular forces between molecules are negligible

R= .0821

Q

Real gases

A

Deviations from the ideal gas law will only be seen when:

  1. The temperature is extremely low
  2. Pressure is extremely high

Use PV/nRT ratio to see cause:

PV/nRT > 1: deviation due to volume

PV/nRT < 1: deviation due to intermolecular forces
