Gases Flashcards
1
Q
Vapor Pressure
A
Pressure of the gas form of a liquid. Exists all over at the surface of the liquid.
Non-Volatile: VP = XsolventVpsolvent
Volatile: VP = (xsoluteVpsolute) + (xsolventVpsolvent)
2
Q
Ideal gas law
A
PV = nRT
Two assumptions:
- Gas molecules are of negligble volume compared to the volume the gas occupies
- All intermolecular forces between molecules are negligible
R= .0821
3
Q
Partial Pressure
A
Ptotal = P1 + P2 + P3 + P4…
4
Q
Real gases
A
Deviations from the ideal gas law will only be seen when:
- The temperature is extremely low
- Pressure is extremely high
Use PV/nRT ratio to see cause:
PV/nRT > 1: deviation due to volume
PV/nRT < 1: deviation due to intermolecular forces
5
Q
Standard Temperature and Pressure
A
P = 1atm V = 22.4 L n = 1 mole R = 0.0821 L\*atm/mol\*K or 8.314 J/mol\*K T = 273 K (0 C)
6
Q
Boyle’s Law
A
P1V1 = P2V2
7
Q
Charle’s Law
A
V1/T1 = V2/T2
8
Q
Gay-Lussac’s Law
A
