Gas Laws Flashcards
What is Boyle’s law?
When temperature is constant, volume is inversely proportional to pressure
What’s Charle’s law?
When pressure in constant, volume is proportional to temperature
What is Avogadro’s law?
When temperature and pressure are constant, equal volumes of gases contain equal numbers of particles
What is Gay-Lussac’s law?
When gases react, the volume of reactants and products are in a simple, whole number ratio, under the same temperature and pressure.
What is a mole?
A mole of any substance is defined as the amount of substance that contains as many particles as there are atoms of carbon-12 in 12g of carbon-12.
What is an ideal gas?
An ideal gas obeys the kinetic theory at all temperatures and pressures
What is a volatile liquid?
Liquid that vaporises at low temperatures
What is the kinetic theory of gases?
1) Gases made of particles in constant motion
2) No attraction/repulsive forces between molecules
3) Size of molecules is negligible
4) Collisions between molecules are elastic
5) Average kinetic energy is proportional to temperature
What are the problems with the kinetic theory?
1) There are intermolecular forces
2) Particles have a definite size
3) collisions between particles are not elastic
