Fuels And Heat Of Reaction Defs Flashcards
What is heat of reaction?
The change in heat when one mole of a substance reacts completely
What is an exothermic reaction?
Gives off heat and has negative delta H
What is an endothermic reaction?
Takes in heat and has positive delta H
What is heat of formation?
Change in heat when one mole of a substance is formed from its reactants
What is the heat of combustion?
Change in heat when one mole of a substance is burned completely in oxygen
What is bond energy?
Amount of energy in KJ needed to break 1 mole of bonds of the same type, all species being in gaseous state.
What is the calorific value of a fuel?
The heat energy produced per kilograms of fuel.
State the law of conservation of energy.
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but only changed from one form to another.
State Hess’s law.
The heat change of a reaction depends only on the initial and final states of the reaction and is independent of the route by which the reaction may occur.
