gas exchange and breathing Flashcards
gas exchange system parts (9)
trachea, bronchus, bronchioles, alveoli, diaphragm, intercostal muscles, lung and ribcage
what is lung volume
the amount of air that you can breathe into your lungs in one breath
what can reduce lung volume
some diseases and smaller body size
gas exchange process in alveoili
air breathed in enters alveoli, oxygen diffuses from alveoli to blood, blood carries to body cells, oxygen for respiration, blood carries from body cells contain a lot of co2 from respiration, co2 diffuses from blood to alveoli and breathed out
adaptations of lungs that make them suited for gas exchange
good blood supply, large inside surface area, moist linings
when air is drawn into lungs what happens to the volume of cavity, pressure and diaphragm
cavity increases, pressure decreases and diaphragm moves down
when air is breathed out what happens to the volume, pressure and diaphragm
volume decreases, pressure increases, diaphragm relaxes
3 things that can affect the gas exchange system
exercise, asthma and smoking
