Gas Exchange Flashcards
What are the 4 parts of gas exchange? Which parts belong to the respiratory system and which to the circulatory system?
ventilation, gas exchange
(respiratory)
circulation, cellular respiration
(circulatory)
What are respiratory surfaces?
thin, moist cell layers involved in gas exchange
found in gills, lungs, skin (amphibians), and trachea (insects)
What characteristics of an animal allow them to have gas exchange occur on the skin?
small organisms, low metabolic rates (amphibians, ells, jellyfish, sponges), large surface areas (coral), moist environments
What are the two types of blood/water flow in gills?
Counter current flow and concurrent flow
Draw out countercurrent flow and concurrent flow
Nice job!
Which type of flow can get more O2 into the blood?
Countercurrent
What are 4 types of ventilation for gills?
Moving gills
Moving water over the gills with cilia
Moving jaws (bony fish)
Moving animals (manta rays)
What animals are trachea the primary respiratory surface for?
insects
Do insects need to ventilate?
Big ones yes, small ones get enough O2 from diffusion
What are spiracles?
The openings that allow air into the tracheae of insects
How do insects ventilate?
muscles loosen and air rushes in and contract to push it out
What are alveoli?
Tiny air sacs in the lungs that allow for gas exchange
What are capillaries? (in the lungs)
Tiny tiny blood vessels that surround the alveoli and exchange gasses
Is ventilation necessary in lungs?
Yes
How is the diaphragm involved in respiration?
Involved in ventilation: creates a vacuum in the chest to pull in air when it moves down and pushes air out when it moves up
