Q

Define: half cell

A

beakers containing electrodes, and a solution. It contains a conjugate redox pair, and often spectator ions in the solution.

What are inert electrodes used for?

A

for conjugate redox pairs that don’t have metals Br2(l)/Br-(aq) and Fe3+(aq)/Fe2+(aq)

14
Q

Direction of electron flow?

A

From the anode (oxidised so loses electrons) to cathode (reduced so gains electrons)

16
Q

Define: salt bridge

A

filter paper soaked with ions that are freely moving, and relatively unreactive in that they don’t form precipitates (usually KNO3)

17
Q

purpose of the salt bridge?

A

o Salt bridge prevents charges from accumulating in the electrodes, as this would prevent the reaction from continuing. Positive cations flow towards the cathode, which gains electrons and becomes more negative. Hence charges are prevented from accumulating.

18
Q

Galavanic cell is aka

A

voltaic cell

19
Q

Define: battery

A

combination of cells connected in a series
