Battery life etcc Flashcards
Define: battery life
number of charge-discharge cycles before a battery becomes unusable.
Does battery life deteriorate at each cycle? why?
yes, as physical and chemical changes occur in cells
for battery life: as temperature increases,
the rate of reaction of side equations increases and battery life decreases
Define: battery capacity
amount of charge available
for battery capacity: as temperature increases,
the rate of reaction of active materails increases and the greater the battery capacity
Define: active materials
reactants and products of cell reactio
Define: self discahrge
the process inwhich side reactions/deterioration continues even when bateries aren’t in use
factors affecting battery performance?
loss of active materials - detached from electrode or converted by side reactions into inactive form
corrosion/failure of internal components
small crystals of active material become larger, increasing resistance to current flow
side reactions form chemicals which impede cell functioning
impurities in cell react with active materials
decrease in contact of electrolye and electrode - by leakage of electrolyte / transofmration into non conductive material
