Gait Faults - Remedies Flashcards
Stumbling
Rocker toe may help. Limited farrier options.
Crossfiring
Front: Trim slightly lower laterally to open stance. Back: Fit tight on medial toe, with trailer or lateral extension. Add heel caulk to trailer if needed.
Interference - hind, cow hocks
Trim lower on lateral toe. Shoe with a square toe and lateral trailer and lateral traction. Recommend splint/brushing boots.
Interference - front, toed out
Shoe light, fit tight medially. Balance mediolaterally and remove flares. Recommend protective splint boots.
Speedy cutting
Front: Fit the shoe under/behind the toe border of the wall. Back: Half round, half swedged shoe with caulked trailer. Trailer and swedge lateral.
Interference - hind, base narrow
Trim lower medially. Shoe with lateral heel extension and remove medial flares. Fit tight medially. Recommend splint/brushing boots.
Toe dragging
If the cause is laziness, shoe heavier to encourage higher swing stage. If lame, shoe to protect from excessive wear, while lameness is treated.
Scalping
Front: Trim short, shoe with half rounds or rocker toed shoes to decrease toe length. Back: Shoe with extended heels & caulks. Suggest protective boots.
Elbow hitting
Shoe shorter and lighter with heel weighted shoes.
